MVLA Out-of-District Course Guidelines

MVLA students may choose to take an out-of-district course (OOD) for the following reasons:
    1. Enrichment 
    2. Credit Recovery 
      • Note:
        • Repeated courses outside of MVLA do not replace grade on GPA (just adds the new grade)
        • Repeated courses taken from MVLA - the new grade replaces the old grade in the students’ GPA

MVLA OUT-OF-DISTRICT COURSE POLICY

  1. It is the responsibility of the student/family, not the counselor nor administrator, to ensure that the OOD/institution meets the following criteria:
      • WASC/ASC accredited
      • UC/CSU approved
      • The institution provides a letter grade and academic credits for the course
      • The institution provides an official transcript ("official academic record" or "official grade report" is not sufficient)  
  2.  Upon completion of the OOD, an official transcript showing course completion must be submitted to the student's high school academic counselor (reminder this course must be pre-approved). 
  3. During the academic year, students in grades 9-11 must be enrolled in a minimum of five classes at their MVLA high school grades. An OOD can be taken as a sixth or seventh course.
  4. Students in grades 12 must be enrolled in a minimum of four classes at their MVLA high school grades.
    Students are able to put up to 40 credits of OOD MVLA coursework on their high school transcript but are limited to 20 credits per academic year, and 20 credits in any given subject area.
    1. Students may add an additional 20 credits if they take a world language not offered at MVLA from an A-G WASC-accredited institution.

  1. Students enrolled in MVLA must follow the process listed on the MVLA OUT-OF-DISTRICT COURSE PERMISSION FORM, prior to enrolling in any outside coursework.
  1. Student submits the MVLA OUT-OF-DISTRICT COURSE PERMISSION FORM to the principal or designee. Carefully read the guidelines listed on this form.
  2. For community college classes, students will need create an account with the community college to submit an automated request, or submits Concurrent Enrollment form to the principal or designee. *If a student submits an automated request, the principal or designee must be added as approver.
  3. Requests will be reviewed and responded to by the principal or designee.
  4. Principal or designee approves or denies the request. *All requests are submitted to the principals in the summer months or to the district office if the principals are on break.
  5. Student completes the outside institution’s process for enrolling in the approved course (varies across institutions).

ADDING A OUT-OF-DISTRICT COURSE TO AN MVLA TRANSCRIPT

 Transcripts for courses taken outside of MVLA to be placed onto the student's MVLA transcript are due to the student's high school counseling office as follows: Official transcripts are to be sent directly from the institution to our registrars

OOD COURSES AND INSTITUTIONS: ADVANCEMENT & GRAD FULFILLMENT

 It is the student’s responsibility to research the institution and to ascertain transferability before signing up for a course.  
 
Please make sure:  
  • The Institution is WASC accredited or regionally accredited and offers coursework that leads to a high school diploma Institutions that have only Supplemental accreditation do not qualify (i.e. Art of Problem Solving, John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, etc.)
  • The course is UC Approved  May sure the institution issues grades, credits and transcripts.  
  • Note:  Colleges expect that an official transcript may be sent from the credit-issuing institution to the college/university. EVEN if it is on the high school transcript. The Institution issues letter grades The Institution issues official transcript If the course does not meet even one of the above criteria, then it cannot be used. 

OOD POLICY EXPLAINED:

MVLA will provide credit towards graduation for completion of accredited online courses, off-campus courses and college courses. A total of 40 credits from non-district courses can be included on the official MVLA transcript.
  • Students are able to put up to 40 credits of non-MVLA coursework on their high school transcript but are limited to 20 credits per academic year, and 20 credits in any given subject area.
    • Heritage language school credits are not included in the 40-credit total. (see above, ensure the heritage language school is WASC accredited and class is UC approved).
    • Courses taken at MVLA Summer School for remediation, high school graduation requirement completion, or summer advancement are not included in the 40-credit total.
  • If the course is required for graduation, the class must be taken at MVLA. This includes:
    • All four years of English
    • World Studies, US History, Civics/Economics
    • Science: Biology, Chemistry 
    • Two years of math
      • We recommend that all math classes be taken in our math pathways, as our teachers vertically build on skills and math content from one course to another.
    • Health
    • PE
  • Students will have several opportunities to submit coursework for credit to be placed on the MVLA transcript. Deadlines will be updated each school year and posted on the district website.
  • Once an Out of District MVLA course has been placed onto a student’s official MVLA transcript, it cannot be removed.
  • It is the responsibility of the parent/student to determine if the Out of District course is accepted by the UC/CSU system, private colleges and universities, out-of-state institutions, or NCAA as fulfilling entrance requirements. It is the responsibility of the parent/student to check with an admissions officer from each campus to which you intend to apply.
  • Courses taken through providers that are WASC-accredited as Supplementary Ed will not be accepted for credit.
  • MVLA will not proctor outside exams.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

  • If current eighth-grade students wish for a summer course to be put on their high school transcript, they must complete the course after they are promoted from middle school, in the summer after eighth grade, AND get their high school administrator approval.
    • See above: parent/student responsible, not counselor/administrator, for finding and ensuring the school/institution is WASC and UC approved.
  • Algebra 1 is a graduation requirement, a student can fulfill this requirement in the successful completion of Alg, I in middle school or high school.
