Message About Mental Health During Summer

MVLA schools will be closed for summer from June 5th until August 12th. It has been a different year for us in many ways, and we want our community and our students to know that we are committed to continuing to support you.
As we transition into the summer, we wanted to emphasize the importance of connection and self-care during the summer. Please continue to find ways to connect with your friends and loved ones, and, if you need extra support, do not hesitate to reach out to mental health professionals. While our school-based mental health services will not be available during the school break, there are many local agencies that will continue to provide mental health services throughout the summer. Below are a few resources including a list of organizations (such as CHAC) that will continue to provide telehealth services.
 
 
Congratulations to all of our seniors, and we wish you well on your life journeys! And we look forward to reconnecting with everyone in the fall.

Estimada Comunidad de MVLA:Las escuelas de MVLA estarán cerradas por el verano  del 5 de junio al 12 de agosto.  Ha sido un año diferente en muchas maneras y queremos que nuestra comunidad y nuestros estudiantes sepan que estamos comprometidos al apoyo continuo en apoyarlos.

Mountain View Los Altos High School District would like to provide parents with a curated list of resources for enrichment and further learning. This list is by no means exhaustive but represents a broad spectrum of thoughtful educational offerings. (View printable list in English/Spanish) Additionally, we’re pleased to provide a sampling of resources for parents to help them navigate at-home learning during the continued shelter-in-place.
 
In addition to the online resources below, MVLA staff and students are compiling a list of “boredom busters” for students to participate in at home. This includes resources for volunteering, crafting, fostering pets, and much more. Their Activities To Do At Home: Quarantine Edition is always expanding, so check back often.

MVLA students have eCards at both the Mountain View and Los Altos public libraries, which have a large collection of popular eBooks and Audiobooks for free reading .(Use our Ebook Central account for more research based assignments).   • Audible - A collection of free read-aloud books, including literary classics.
  • Code.org - Opportunities for students to practice coding through games and challenges.
  • College Board Elective – New digital magazine with a variety of interviews, tech information, career profiles, and news articles.
  • Khan Academy - A wide variety of topics, content areas, and lessons for all grade levels. Choose to view “Courses” located on the top left corner of the homepage. Great for all learners, including English language learners.
  • KQED - Public radio and TV source providing at-home learning response to school closures for all students in California. New educational schedule provides programming for high school students from 1-6 p.m. daily.
    • National Council of Teachers of English - Web-based resources for reading and writing practice:
  • National Geographic -  Global nonprofit organization committed to exploring and protecting our planet.
  • The New York Times - A continuously updated list of resources, writing prompts, critical thinking prompts and more based on current events and of-the-moment ideas.
  • NPR - Use the links on the website to connect to NPR content, including a wide variety of podcasts. There is something there for everyone.
  • Open Library - a free online source for books and cultural artifacts, run by a non-profit.
  • Project Gutenberg - A free collection of 61,000 downloadable classic texts.
  • Santa Clara County Library - 24/7 source with free access to eBooks, magazines, audiobooks, music, streaming video, online research, digital subscription to the New York Times, online classes with Lynda.com and Rosetta Stone.
  • Skype A Scientist - Normally a resource that matches classrooms with scientists, this resource now has a sign-up for families.
  • Smithsonian - Official website of the Smithsonian, the world's largest museum and research complex, with 19 museums, 9 research centers, and affiliates around the world.
  • TED Talks – Influential videos from expert speakers on education, business, science, tech and creativity, with subtitles in 100+ languages.
  • 12 Museums that offer virtual tours - Page with links to virtual tours of some of the world’s best museums.
 

CURRENT POLICY

In accordance with guidance from the California Department of Education, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department and the County Office of Education, MVLA’s policy related to school operations is below, and will be updated as local, state, and federal guidelines and recommendations are revised.
 

SCHOOL CLOSURES

Bay Area schools are closed through the remainder of the school year. While schools are physically closed, school is still in session and will follow the District’s Distance Learning Plan.
 
The Public Health Department continues to require all Santa Clara County residents to continue sheltering at their place of residence and has specified essential business activities deemed essential.

LEARNING AND INSTRUCTION

For the remainder of the school year, and while complying with the shelter-in-place order, we will follow our Distance Learning Plan.
 
Students are asked to complete this form if a Chromebook and/or home internet access is still needed while MVLA schools remain closed. MVLA will contact families once all items are ready to be distributed. We are pleased to share that MVLA has qualified for the T-Mobile EmpowerED program, aimed a bridging the digital "homework gap" for low-income students by providing Wi-Fi hotspot devices so they can have access to digital textbooks and other materials off-campus.  These hotspots are properly filtered and provide unlimited data. The monthly costs for the devices will be covered by the MVLA Foundation.
 
MVLA continues to work with local internet and WiFi providers to identify resources to provide free and/or low-cost services so students can have equitable access to online learning resources. Comcast has already offered to provide their Internet Essentials plan to low-income families at no cost for 60 days. They are also increasing internet speeds for existing customers to help accommodate the anticipated greater demand at home. 
 
To sign up, applicants can simply visit www.internetessentials.com. The accessible website also includes the option to video chat with customer service agents in American Sign Language. There are also two dedicated phone numbers 1-855-846-8376 for English and 1-855-765-6995 for Spanish.

EVENT CANCELLATIONS

All MVLA events are canceled during this school closure period, and a determination on post-closure events will be made in alignment with the guidelines current at that time. Please monitor our Event Cancellations/Postponements page for updates closer to the reopening of schools.

The California Parent & Youth Helpline provides a free hotline to provide emotional support and referrals for parents and youth to address the stress and concerns of COVID-19 as it may be impacting families. Staff are able to assist in English, Spanish, and other languages. The hotline number is 1-855-4APARENT - or 855-427-2736.

Child Care Support for Families in Santa Clara County
The Santa Clara County Office of Education, in partnership with community organizations and agencies throughout Santa Clara County, is coordinating childcare programs for families and providing support for child care providers. Here is a list of resources to connect families to childcare options throughout Santa Clara County based on the  June 5,  2020 Order of the Health Officer of the County of Santa Clara.  An Interactive Child Care Map is available to help families find the closest provider.

All open childcare centers and family childcare homes in Santa Clara County will follow social distancing, sanitation, and hygiene practices specified by the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department, the State of California and the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)​. Hours of operation, age requirements and cost vary per program. 
 
Apoyo de cuidado infantil para familias en el condado de Santa Clara

Community Services Agency (CSA)
CSA has been designated an essential service provider for Mountain View, Los Altos, and Los Altos Hills, and will be operational during these difficult times, providing rental assistance, and advice for people economically impacted by COVID-19.  All CSA services have been modified in some way as a result of the shelter-in-place order. The front office is closed to the public, and staff ask that people call the office at 650-968-0836 and leave a voicemail message. Due to the volume of calls, please allow CSA staff 48 hours to return the call.  Please monitor CSA’s Facebook page for regular updates.

As numbers of cases of COVID-19 increase, so does the associated anxiety, feelings of fear and uncertainty, and other mental health concerns around the developing situation. The mental health effects of COVID-19 are just as important to address as are the physical health effects. The County of Santa Clara Behavioral Health Services Department (BHSD) and our Community Based Organizations continue to provide services and support.

Santa Clara County Emergency Operations Center
The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is taking action to address novel coronavirus, protect the public, and keep the community informed on new policies related to contact tracing and guidance for essential workers. The EOC provides live briefings Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays on its Facebook page, and regularly updates a COVID-19 Cases Dashboard with information about cases in Santa Clara County.
